Hans Andersen Brendekilde painted the quieter corners of Danish life — a beech wood carpeted in spring anemones, a farm gate where two neighbors pause to talk, a garden bench shared by a mother and daughter on a warm afternoon. Working through the late nineteenth century, he moved easily between rural genre scenes, naturalist studies of garden creatures and flowers, and the occasional Italian landscape from his travels south.
