Collection: Arthur Thiele Postcards

German illustrator Arthur Thiele signed his postcards “Arth. Thiele” and populated them with cats living entirely human lives: a black cat jester eyeing a toy elephant, a bonneted cat lady in a feathered hat, an archer taking aim, a maid sweeping up roses in front of a mirror. A dachshund trots in among the cast, roses and ribbons turn up in nearly every scene, and even bedtime gets a doll co-star. The comic timing and warm palette have kept these early-1900s cards popular with collectors of anthropomorphic animal art.
