Rooks in a Snow-Covered Winter Park, Mønsted

Rooks give a snow-covered park the one moving element it would otherwise lack, dark bodies scattered across white ground and bare branches in a palette that's almost entirely without color. Mønsted's winter scenes tend toward stillness — frozen water, undisturbed snowfall — and birds are one of the few devices he uses to break that quiet without introducing a human figure. The rooks read as opportunistic rather than posed, working the ground the way the species does through any winter, which keeps the scene from tipping into overt sentiment.
