Painted in the last winter of the First World War, this is one of Mønsted's most charged landscapes — a burning orange-gold sun breaking through the dark vertical trunks of a Danish beech and oak forest, the snow set alight with warm reflected light. The chiaroscuro of icy cold and incandescent warmth gives the image both exultation and a quieter, wartime weight, distinct from the calmer register of his usual winter forests.
