Winter Logging Sled in the Forest, Mønsted

Cut timber loaded onto a sled and hauled through snow belongs to the working half of winter that Mønsted painted far less often than its picturesque half. Runners have already packed the forest track into something usable, and the trees standing beyond the clearing carry snow the way they do throughout his winter catalogue — heavy, undisturbed, cold enough to hold. What separates this scene from a purely decorative snowscape is the labor implied by the sled itself: someone felled these trees, someone is hauling them out before the light or the weather turns. Mønsted rarely lets people or their work dominate a composition, but here the sled gives the forest a use beyond scenery, tying the picturesque winter light to an ordinary rural task.
