Mønsted's beech forest interiors belong to the heart of his Danish work, and this is among the most monumental — enormous gnarled trunks of ancient beeches rise like cathedral columns, a small stream winding between them through dappled summer green. The scale of the trees gives the forest the quiet of a sanctuary. The stream reads as incidental — a thin thread through the roots — against the overwhelming vertical mass of the trunks. Mønsted returned to these beech forest interiors throughout his mature work — they appear across decades, each study going deeper into the architecture of trunk, canopy, and light. This is among his most sustained.
