A shepherd moves three cattle through a field, the low spring sun breaking through an oak's bare branches behind them — Mønsted used backlighting often, but here the foreground action earns equal attention alongside the light effect. The starburst through bare branches was a technical challenge few of his contemporaries attempted so directly, but the scene is not just a light study: the working figures and grazing cattle give it subject and scale. The oak hasn't leafed out yet, which is why the sun gets through at all; a few weeks later, this view wouldn't exist. Mønsted was drawn to these narrow seasonal windows throughout his career, painting conditions that only lasted a matter of days.
