Birch bark holds its white through every season, but against spring's sparse new leaf the contrast shifts — branches are mostly bare, the first pale-green leaves not yet enough to close the canopy, and wildflowers have pushed through along the bank. Mønsted used birch against still water throughout his career, and this scene catches the tree at its most skeletal, before summer fills in the gaps. The lake stays quiet, reflecting white trunks and the open sky above them in a register of early spring before the season fully commits. Nordic light in early spring has a particular quality — clear, undiffused, nothing yet blocking it from above — that Mønsted captures here without turning it into a portrait of a specific month. From our painting art postcard collection. Postcard, 10×15 cm, 350 g/m² art stock.
