Flowering branches, heavy with small white blossom, lean out over a still lake where two swans move across calm water. Mønsted painted lakes and ponds throughout his career, drawn to their capacity for reflection almost as much as the water itself — trees, sky, and birds all doubled on the surface. The composition is built in layers, from the near blossom through the water's edge to the pale distant shore, a structure typical of his more contemplative spring work. Unlike his forest interiors, this is an open, breathing scene, all soft light and pale cloud. Swans appear rarely enough in Mønsted's catalogue that this counts among his more distinctive lake subjects. It suits a spring art postcard order, a postcrossing exchange, or simply a quiet seasonal greeting.
