Richard Gallo & His Dog Dick — Gustave Caillebotte | Art Postcard

Gustave Caillebotte painted his friend Richard Gallo walking his small black dog, Dick, along the Seine at Petit-Gennevilliers in 1884 — a relaxed, light-bleached study of friendship away from the pace of Paris. Dogs appear rarely in Caillebotte's work, and the informality here, closer to a snapshot than a formal portrait, sets it apart from his figure paintings, which more often place a solitary man against architecture.
