Mykola Pymonenko's portraits of young Ukrainian women became, over time, an unofficial visual vocabulary for a whole country — the embroidered blouse, the red vest worn over it, the relaxed stance of someone who knows her own village. In this work the sitter pauses on a sunlit path, hands on her hips, half-smiling at the painter as if at an old acquaintance.
