Le Chat blanc — Pierre Bonnard's White Cat Postcard

Bonnard's Le Chat blanc turns an ordinary stretching cat into something closer to caricature: eyes shut, back arched sky-high, its ginger-patched body balanced on legs stretched almost past belief. Dark green foliage presses in behind it, the ochre ground barely visible beneath such an exaggerated pose. It is one of Bonnard's most playful animal studies, painted with the same close attention he gave to people and interiors, proof that he found comedy as often as he found colour.
