Figures Hidden in the Garden Foliage — Pierre Bonnard Postcard

Green nearly swallows the whole composition in this Bonnard garden scene: a dense mass of dappled foliage, slender reddish trunks and sun-flecked shadow fill almost every inch of the card. Two figures in white are barely legible within it — one seated low at left, another standing further back by the branches — more a suggestion of presence than a portrait, with only a strip of pale lawn breaking through at lower right. It is Bonnard at his most Intimist, letting colour and light stand in for detail, a garden remembered rather than recorded, cool and enclosed against the summer heat beyond its edges. Framed, it brings a leafy hush to a wall; sent as a card, it suits a gardener or a lover of green, and it completes a set with other outdoor scenes from the Pierre Bonnard collection.
