Dead End (L'Impasse) — Pierre Bonnard Art Postcard

Dead End closes a narrow southern lane between a tall pale wall and a row of ochre houses, the passage lit hard by Midi sun until every surface seems to hold its own small fire — a green garden door here, a bright orange doorway there, blue-green shrubs pushing in at the edges. At the foot of the passage two small figures pause, barely more than a few strokes of colour, easy to miss against the glare. Bonnard signed the canvas quietly at lower left, a small human mark on an otherwise architectural view. It is a picture about heat and enclosure as much as about any particular street, the kind of alley every southern town seems to keep.
