Park Pond Beneath Autumn Chestnut Canopy, Mønsted

A park pond sits below chestnut canopy caught in late-season colour — leaves have begun to yellow and some have fallen to the surface, disturbing the reflection that would otherwise hold the trees in perfect duplicate. Mønsted's still-water compositions rarely look for the same scene twice; here the season has done the work, converting what would be a decorative summer mirror into something quieter and more muted. Public parks and private estate grounds blur together in his landscape work, and this scene reads as either — manicured enough to suggest cultivation, wild enough at the pond's edge to avoid feeling overly arranged.
