Norwegian Winter Street at Sunset, Mønsted

Norway gave Mønsted a different winter light than the one he found closer to home, and this street scene catches it at its most particular moment — the sun already low, throwing long color across snow that would read as flat white under midday light. Timber houses line the street in the vernacular typical of Norwegian coastal towns, their dark facades holding heat against the cold palette everywhere else in the composition. Travel subjects like this sit apart from his Danish beech forests and southern Mediterranean scenes, evidence of how widely he worked to find winter light worth painting. The street does the ordinary work of daily life — figures moving home before dark — while the sunset turns an unremarkable evening into a study in color temperature. From our painting art postcard collection. Postcard, 10×15 cm, 350 g/m² art stock.
