Afternoon Tea, Saint-Maxime — Henri Lebasque Postcard

"Afternoon Tea on the Terrace in Saint-Maxime" gathers everything Lebasque came south for: the Mediterranean shimmering between the trees, a long blue tablecloth heaped with peaches and grapes, a young woman in white peeling fruit, another in a dark hat leaning toward a curly-haired child in pink, and a girl in red holding a small melon at the side. After settling on the Côte d'Azur, Lebasque painted the family terrace many times — this is one of the warmest examples.
