Klimt — Music (Die Musik, 1895) Art Postcard

Music dates from 1895 and shows Klimt at a crossroads: still a young Vienna painter, already reaching toward the symbolist vocabulary that would define his mature work. The symbolist iconography — lyre, sphinx, Greek-revival ornament — belongs to a Vienna still looking backward, even as Klimt himself was already reaching forward. The painting now hangs in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
