Klimt — Portrait of Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein Postcard

Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein was the sister of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Klimt painted her in 1905 in white off-the-shoulder dress, cool grey wall behind. The sitter reportedly disliked the portrait — she found it too ornamental. The original is at the Neue Pinakothek, Munich. A postcard with a biographical footnote: the tension between the subject's intelligence and the painter's decorative instinct is part of what makes it alive.
