An early, unusually concentrated nature study from the painter's Yerres years, this canvas reduces a river to two simple gestures: a wooden plank at the foreground bank and a slow, deliberate count of rain rings spreading across the green water. Caillebotte was already interested in surface, structure, and what happens when a calm scene is interrupted by a small, repeating event — here rain, elsewhere boat wakes or window reflections in his later Paris pictures. The close vantage and the almost scientific attention to the pattern of ripples make this unlike anything in his urban work, and suggest the gardener-naturalist working quietly alongside the bolder social painter he would become. A still, unexpected card for a still, unexpected letter, and a fitting companion to his other Yerres river studies for anyone building a collection around water and light.
