Yellow Fields, Gennevilliers — Caillebotte | Postcard Zolota Ptakha

By the mid-1880s Caillebotte had moved north of the Seine to Petit Gennevilliers and started painting the wide, flat plain that opens behind it — here under yellow rapeseed in bloom, the village reduced to a thin pale strip on the horizon. The canvas now hangs at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and reads beautifully as a card to anyone who likes their landscapes deliberately quiet.
