Plain of Gennevilliers, Yellow Fields — Gustave Caillebotte | Postcard

By the mid-1880s Caillebotte had settled north of the Seine at Petit Gennevilliers and turned his attention to the wide, flat plain behind it — here painted under a haze of yellow rapeseed in bloom, the village compressed to a thin pale band along the horizon. Sky and field dwarf everything human; there's no figure, no street, no balcony rail, just land, crop, and horizon carrying the whole composition. It's about as far as he ever strayed from his Paris streets, and the shift makes this one of his most unexpected canvases.
