This Yerres-period canvas catches Caillebotte's family garden at its most domestic: his brother Martial reading in a wirework chair, a parterre of red flowers and tubbed orange trees behind him, the whole scene folded into deep afternoon shade. The painter's structural eye turns even a private garden into a compositional exercise — the latticed chair, the orange-tree containers, the reading figure, the path cutting through — yet the mood stays unhurried and close, the opposite of the boulevard studies that would later make him famous.
