Portraits in the Country — Gustave Caillebotte | Art Postcard

Shown at the 1877 Impressionist exhibition and now held at the Musée Baron Gérard in Bayeux, this group portrait gathers Caillebotte's mother, a cousin, an aunt, and a family friend on the terrace at Yerres, sewing and reading beneath a striped awning with a bed of red flowers glowing behind them. It is one of the few Caillebotte works built entirely around female company rather than a solitary male figure, each woman given the same formal weight he usually gave a building or a bridge.
