Chrysanthemums in Two Vases — Gustave Caillebotte | Art Postcard

Late in life Caillebotte became an obsessive amateur horticulturist at Petit Gennevilliers, and this still life is one of the chrysanthemum studies he painted indoors. An earthenware jug on the left holds white, yellow, and rust-brown blooms; a blue-and-white Chinese porcelain vase on the right holds a second, more orange bunch, with loose petals already scattered across the table between them. The doubled vases give the composition a quiet symmetry rare in his other still lifes — two very different vessels weighed against each other with real botanical precision.
