Late in life Caillebotte became an obsessive amateur horticulturist at Petit Gennevilliers, and chrysanthemums in their autumn colours are among the still lifes he painted indoors. Earthen jug on the left, blue-and-white Chinese porcelain on the right, petals already loosening onto the table — a Japonist note close to Manet, painted by a man who really knew his plants.
