Fanny Brate — Children's Quarrel on the Sandy Path

Five children have stopped on a sandy track, and something has just happened. A girl in the middle stands with her hat in her hand, in tears; a boy on the right points at her with the flat certainty children bring to accusations. An older girl in dark dress and woven hat carries a basket; another in apron and headscarf stands between the two sides, unresolved.

Fanny Brate rarely painted conflict — most of her work is garden and stillness. This is the one card in the series with a plot, which makes it worth reading twice before you decide who's right.
