Fanny Brate – Roses in a Crystal Vase, 1938 – Postcard

Fanny Brate spent decades painting the flowers of Swedish gardens, and this 1938 still life is one of her most generous: a mass of pale pink roses and small white blossoms fills a heavy diamond-cut crystal vase, while a spool of thread and a pair of scissors rest on the table nearby. Painted at seventy-seven, it carries the confidence of an artist with nothing left to prove — just flowers, cut glass, and good morning light. Look closely and the scissors give the story away: someone set down needlework to arrange these roses.
