By the 1930s Fanny Brate had painted flowers for decades, and this late still life shows it: a handful of lily-of-the-valley stems arch gracefully from a silver vase on a draped table, their small white bells catching the soft light of a spring morning. There's nothing showy here, just close attention to a flower most people only see up close for a few weeks each year.
