Emile Claus Barefoot Woman with Wheat Sheaf Postcard

Weight is the whole subject here: a young Flemish woman walks barefoot across summer grass, a golden wheat sheaf far larger than she is balanced against her shoulder, its dry stalks catching the afternoon sun. Behind her, a thatched-roof cottage with a brick chimney and a low wooden fence place the scene firmly in rural Flanders, geese wandering near the gate. Painted with academic precision rather than Claus's later loose Luminist strokes.

A strong choice for anyone drawn to harvest season or rural Flemish life.
