Emile Claus Woman and Cow in Grain Field Postcard

Emile Claus gives the grain the canvas here. A tall, feathery wall of ripening wheat fills the left half of the composition, pale-golden stalks bent by a summer breeze and rendered in short divisionist strokes that make the whole field shimmer with stored heat. A woman in a dark dress stands on a mown path, a brown-and-white cow beside her, its head lowered into the crop line as if testing the harvest.

Slip this pre-harvest Luminist scene into an envelope, or file it beside the others in Claus's Flemish countryside series — a quiet field before the work of August begins.
