Emile Claus Winter Ice and Kick-Sledge Postcard

The last light of a winter afternoon lies in long horizontal bands of pink and apricot across a frozen river, warm tones glowing strangely against the cold. A bearded man in a heavy patterned jacket stands at the near edge of the ice, a low wooden kick-sledge waiting at his feet; behind him a younger figure carries another sled across the snow, while two more silhouettes rest on a distant ridge. Nothing moves quickly here — the sky does all the work.

Emile Claus signed this canvas, and the stillness makes it an easy one to send to someone who needs a slow moment this winter.
