Emile Claus Sugar Beet Harvest Workers Postcard

Four figures bend low over a flat, grey Flemish field, pulling sugar beets from the earth row by row. A woman in a white headscarf pauses with her spade planted in the soil; a horse-drawn cart waits at the field's edge, and a line of bare trees marks the horizon under a heavy autumn sky. Painted before Luminism reshaped his palette, Emile Claus renders the labor without any sweetening — flat light, damp ground, bodies working in rhythm.

A quietly serious pick for a collection of agricultural or social-realist art, or for a note that doesn't try to cheer anyone up.
