Emile Claus – Riverside Ferry Gathering Postcard

The whole village seems to have turned out for the afternoon. A dozen figures — men in dark hats, women in summer blouses, children up front — line a riverbank thick with wildflowers, watching a flat ferry pole its way across. Passengers wait on deck; beyond the far bank, poplars and a thin church spire mark the horizon. Emile Claus paints the moment with real enjoyment, not as a staged genre scene but as something he clearly liked watching.

Among his Leie paintings this is the busiest and most companionable — a fitting card to send with news of your own gathering.
