Emile Claus Open Window Red Flower Postcard

One red flower does all the work here. Everything else is geometry and weathering: an open casement window, grey-blue shutters flung wide against sun-bleached cream plaster; in front, a rustic wooden fence of crossed planks, painted the same faded hue as the shutters. Unpeopled and nearly abstract, the scene reads as pure form and colour — until the single red bloom in its small terracotta pot on the sill snaps everything into focus.

Sparse enough to work as a plain thank-you note, or to sit framed beside other minimalist still lifes.
