Emile Claus Leie River Water Lilies Postcard

This is the view Emile Claus returned to again and again: the Leie at its widest and stillest, painted in full Luminist mode. A cluster of white water-lily blooms sits in the foreground, thick creamy dabs over a web of green and ochre pads, while the silver river carries the reflection of poplars and sky. On the far bank, the flat Flemish meadow reads in lime and yellow-green, grazing cattle and a few white farmhouse roofs among the red flower accents, and a single angler stands small against the horizon.

The subject he painted more than any other — a fitting choice if you're collecting his river views specifically, or just want the calmest card in the stack.
