Emile Claus Girl with Wicker Basket in a Meadow Postcard

The meadow is the real subject, and she's part of it. A young woman with auburn hair has crouched in tall grass beside a small stream, arms wrapped around a large wicker basket as if gathering what the field offers. Claus's Luminist brushwork is at its most emphatic here — short, feathery strokes of lime and sun-yellow build the grass into a surface that seems to vibrate, while scattered poppy dots burn red through the green.

The brightest and most outdoor of Claus's postcards in this set — well suited to a summer or garden-themed card exchange.
