Garden Fence Courtship — Emile Claus Postcard

Storytelling takes over in this spring garden scene: a young woman in a blue bodice stands among broad cabbage leaves, spade in hand, while a young man in a brown jacket leans over the wooden fence beside her, clearly more interested in conversation than in the vegetables. A flowering elder bush spills white blossom over the fence, and a basket and rake left on the grass suggest her work was interrupted mid-task.

Emile Claus gives the scene a gentle, unhurried charm rare in his more atmospheric landscapes — a card that suits a love letter as well as a board of favourite courtship scenes.
