Emile Claus – Flemish Canal Townscape Postcard

A row of Flemish merchant houses — brick, pale stucco, pink plaster — lines a stone canal quay under plane trees in late-summer leaf. Two figures in dark coats walk the quay at an unhurried pace, and the water below catches broken reflections of the facades. Painted by Emile Claus, better known for river light along the Leie, this urban corner shows an unexpected side of his work.

For collectors building a set of Claus postcards, this is the one that breaks the pattern — worth the space next to his more familiar landscapes.
