Emile Claus, Cow on the Leie in Autumn — Postcard

A black-and-white cow grazes on the grassy bank above the Leie, and behind her the river does the rest of the work. A row of autumn poplars on the far side burns in orange, rust, gold, and olive-green, doubled by reflection in the water, while red-tiled farm buildings and a scatter of white cattle show faintly through the trees. The sky stays a flat, silvery overcast — deliberately understated, so every colour in the picture comes from the poplars.

Pairs naturally with the misty pasture study elsewhere in this collection, if you're gathering Claus's animal scenes.
