Emile Claus — House Behind an Autumn Tree Postcard

Mystery, not sunlight, defines this quiet corner of the collection. A pale yellow stucco house with green-shuttered windows sits half-hidden behind a gnarled old tree, its sparse orange-brown branches spreading wide against a soft blue-grey autumn sky. Long silver-green grass fills the foreground, the brushwork dense and heavy throughout, closer to late Monet than to Claus's brighter Luminist scenes elsewhere in this series. A slightly melancholy postcard — send it to someone who prefers a house that keeps a little of itself hidden.
