Emile Claus Ripening Apples Orchard Postcard

Emile Claus rarely worked this close. Six or seven large apples crowd the foreground of this farmyard orchard study, painted at every stage of ripening — yellow-green shading into red-orange, some blushed deep rose — in thick, luscious impasto that makes the fruit look almost edible. Broad leaves crowd the branches, and behind them a thatched-roof farmhouse settles into view, with a green-shuttered window and a wooden ladder propped against the wall.

The thick impasto texture holds up beautifully even at postcard scale.
