Early Spring River with Marsh Marigolds

Yellow marsh marigolds crowd the shallows where a river bends, the water still carrying the flat grey light of a season not fully turned. Mønsted painted this kind of early-spring wetland more than once, treating the marigolds less as a bouquet than as evidence that winter had actually ended. There's no drama in the scene — just close attention to a bank most people walk past without noticing. It belongs to a quieter strand of his work, closer to botanical study than grand landscape. The yellow is the only saturated color in an otherwise muted composition, placed deliberately to carry the whole scene on its own.
