Winter Park with Ancient Oaks, Peder Mønsted — Art Postcard

A different mood from the children-sledding park scene — this is the same kind of royal Danish park, but the painter has set the ancient oaks themselves at centre, monumental and gnarled, some hollow, their mossy trunks heavy in deep winter snow. A single figure, faint in the distance, gives the scale of the trees their full force. The atmosphere is one of slowed, almost archaic time — as though the park belongs to an older Denmark than the one beyond its gates. Mønsted painted these monumental tree subjects throughout his career, returning to the ancient park oaks with the same persistence other painters gave to coastlines or cathedral interiors.
