Winter Park with Ancient Oaks, Peder Mønsted — Art Postcard

A different mood from the children-sledding park scene — this is the same kind of royal Danish park, but the painter has set the ancient oaks themselves at centre, monumental and gnarled, some hollow, their mossy trunks heavy in deep winter snow. A single figure, faint in the distance, gives the scale of the trees their full force. The atmosphere is one of slowed, almost archaic time.
