Children with the Herd — Mykola Pymonenko Postcard

This is rural Ukrainian childhood as Mykola Pymonenko (1862–1912) saw it — two children driving the family herd along a muddy village path, geese off to one side, thatched roofs in the soft grey distance. Pymonenko's gift was to grant working children the same dignity he gave saints and ceremonies, and the scene holds that quiet respect.
