White and Yellow Chrysanthemums — Gustave Caillebotte | Art Postcard

Cropped tight against a chrysanthemum bed at Petit Gennevilliers, this 1893 canvas keeps the eye inside the flowers rather than pulling back to the wider garden. By this point in his life Caillebotte was as much horticulturist as painter, corresponding with Monet about seed varieties and entering his own chrysanthemums in the Paris horticultural show. White, yellow, and pale-pink blooms crowd the frame, loose and slightly overblown, caught at the exact point of full bloom.
