A hare crossing open ground in winter is a study in pure motion. Liljefors knew it: the body of the animal in mid-bound, the white coat barely separating from the snow, only the dark tips of the ears and the shadow underneath holding the figure to the earth.
The painting on this card narrows the scene almost to abstraction. A line of trees on the horizon, an open snowy plain, a single hare in its winter colouring — and the rest is left to the careful weighting of grey, blue and white. Liljefors trusted the viewer to read the cold light without it being spelled out.
A clean A6 reproduction, equally at home in a quiet postcrossing exchange and on the wall above a reading chair. Sits naturally beside other Scandinavian landscape pieces or studies of northern wildlife.
