Bruno Liljefors — Moose in Winter Forest

A moose is a difficult animal to paint — too easily turned into silhouette or symbol. Liljefors avoids both. He puts the family quietly into the trees and lets the scale do its own work: the depth of snow, the broken light through pine and birch, the patient stand of the larger animal while a calf settles closer in. Nothing is dramatized; the picture simply waits, the way the forest waits, until the small movement of an ear or breath gives the scene its centre.
