Two herring gulls rest on bare coastal rock, the sea moving slowly behind them, the sky working its way through pinks and warm greys at the end of the day. Liljefors paints these birds without sentimentality: the white of the feathers is held in clean strokes, the grey mantle keeps its weight, and the yellow eye does the small precise work of giving the animal its presence. The rock under them carries the heat of the day a little longer than the air does.
Reproduced as an A6 card on heavy art paper, the warm palette and salt-air light survive the international post well. A welcome arrival for a postcrossing partner who collects coastal scenes, a card for a friend whose summer plans involve a long boat journey, or a small unframed picture pinned next to the window where evening light reaches first.
