Bruno Liljefors — Coastal Sunset with Seagull, 1925

By 1925 Liljefors had been painting Sweden's coasts for most of his life, and the late seascapes carry the unforced ease of a painter no longer trying to impress anyone. A lone gull settles on the shore of a quiet archipelago, the water just barely moving, the sky working itself into long bands of pink and violet over the islands. The bird is small in the frame on purpose — the picture belongs to the evening as much as to the animal.

A6 on heavy art paper holds the cooling palette and the wide horizon without losing them. The format is gentle for the international post and the picture is gentle on the eye.
