Bruno Liljefors — Chaffinch with Fledglings

Spruce branches have their own architecture, and Liljefors loved to set small birds against it. Here a male chaffinch holds his place on a fir twig while two fledglings stay close, their feathers still soft, the colours of the parent already promised in miniature. The scene is summer — green light filtering through needles, a stillness that asks the viewer not to make a noise. It is one of those modest studies that quietly explain why Liljefors is remembered as a bird painter long after his more dramatic predator scenes have been hung in museums.
