Bruno Liljefors — Bullfinches in Snowy Shrubs

Few birds reward a winter walk like bullfinches. Their red breasts against bare snow are the kind of detail painters argue over how to render without overdoing it — and Liljefors solved it by simply letting the colour stand where the colour was.

This group study places several birds in a thicket weighed down with snow. The palette is overwhelmingly grey and white, then the eye reaches the bullfinches and everything tightens. Liljefors keeps the brushwork deliberately unflashy; the painter never wants to upstage what he is looking at.
